Co-organised by TAP Network, World Vision, and Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, the HLPF side event “Illustrating the Power of Citizen Generated Data for Improved Public Service Delivery and SDG Accountability” was held for discussions about putting people at the center of the data revolution to take place. The panel particularly spent time illustrating the complementary value of citizen generated data to traditional statistics.

Ms. Besinati highlighted the importance of reflecting the opinion of often-marginalized population groups in policy making if we wish to achieve the 2030 Agenda in a manner where no one is left behind. Indonesian young leader Roslinda shared her heartening experience in being empowered by international collaborative effort on education, and eventually standing up to help empower other children in her own village. She reminded the audience that children too have right to participate in policymaking that matters to their wellbeing, and urged parents to be open-minded when it comes to letting go of the negative stigma towards children on their competence to make an informed decision about their own future. She also expressed that only when the voices of local communities are respected, can the best policies be created to protect the human rights of those who are currently suppressed. Mr. Deepesh provided an overview of the current challenges faced by organizations when they try to link big data with the actual decision-making process that will generate an impact. This is mainly because of the gap between traditional data and citizen generated data. He encouraged continual constructive dialogue with the governments and wished for stakeholders to further strengthen ties with one another to achieve all SDGs.
